Just Another Healing

The healing of the Syrophoenician Woman’s daughter comes directly after Jesus’ teaching on clean and unclean. It is not just another healing but a political incident. The old barriers and taboos are crumbling between people.

The second healing references the prophecy of Isaiah 35:5-6: blind eyes will be opened, deaf ears will be unstopped, and silent tongues will start to sing. To quote N. T. Wright, “It always was and is, and perhaps supremely so in Jesus’ actions, a sign of God’s love breaking into the painful and death-laden present world. It was and is a pointer to the great Healing that will occur when the secret is out, when Jesus is finally revealed to the whole world, and our present stammering praise is turned into full-hearted song.”
