This week, the Rev. Trent Pettit and Dr. Kira Moolman Pettit discuss Acts 19-20, which includes baptisms, holy handkerchiefs, mob riots, a sermon so long it kills a man (only for him to be resurrected for the ending), and a moving farewell speech.  

Discussion Questions: 

Baptism shows us that belief is tied to embodiment. We see that played out with the splash of water, the weight of hands on heads, the sound of “in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.”  We see this embodied faith as Christians live out their faith in real life by the power of the Spirit. If you have been baptized, what do you remember about your baptism and what difference does it make to your life? If you have been present at another’s baptism, what do you notice about that service?  

 Evangelism is often intimidating for many of us. What difference would it make to see evangelism as proclamation and witness rather than confrontation? 

Paul gives a farewell speech to the elders in Ephesus at the end of chapter 20. What is the connection between the sacrificial nature of Paul’s life and the vocation of Christian disciples like you and me to shepherd others? 

 Kira and Trent talked about the ways that our families and communities provide opportunities for us to practice sacrificial love. What do you find challenging about this practice? Where do you find joy in it? Who models that sacrificial love in your life?
